Contemplative Revolution

Success, Failure and Meaning with Laurence Freeman

Episode Summary

An exploration into what success and failure mean. Laurence starts with his experience whilst teaching an MBA class at a business school, a course called meditation and leadership. "I asked the students to meditate twice a day for 6 weeks, which is really essential to get the meaning of the course, the purpose to develop a daily practice. They usually look at me blankly. In the first week, a certain amount of students drop out. The next stage is that the majority of the students will fail to meet that challenge. Failing to meditate is going to be an instructive experience and by the end, some of them would have actually developed the habit of meditation." Success, failure, what do they mean? Failure seems a negative idea yet we face an enormous opportunity to learn from it. Failure is so widespread yet we try to avoid it.
